1/7/2018 – Epiphany

On this feast of the Epiphany, the manifestation of the mystery of our salvation as St. Paul expresses it in our second reading from Ephesians, I’d like to do something fun.

If you have a cell phone with you, or a tablet, would you get it out? Go ahead and take a moment to do so.

Now find the flashlight function, you know the one that uses your camera flash as a bright flashlight when you need it. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, find a second grader near you and they’ll show you!

Ready? (Sacristan _______) Kill the lights in the church. Now turn your phone toward the ceiling and then turn your flashlights on. Now turn them toward you lap. Makes a big difference in being able to see.

Now lift them high and sway back and forth like at a concert. Thanks. Now turn them off and please turn on the lights once again.

Now listen once again to these words from our first reading, edited a bit by yours truly.

“Rise up on splendor, St. Michael Parish! Your light has come, the glory of the Lord shines upon you.

“See, darkness covers so many in Olympia and Thurston County and thick clouds cover the people like the homeless and the mentally ill who have no one to care for them; like those caught up in materialism and self-centered pursuits; like those who reject the light of the truth of the Gospel and choose the darkness of sin.

“Rise up in splendor St. Michael Parish. Thurston County shall walk by your light and these folks by your shining radiance.

“Raise your eyes and look about; they all gather and come to you. Then you shall be radiant at what you see, your heart shall throb and overflow.”

I believe that this is our call this Epiphany, 2018 – (turn on flashlight) to be light for Thurston County in a way we never have been before.

I believe that through the efforts of our Parish Strategic Plan, Vision 2026, that the Lord is calling us and challenging us to evangelize and invite as never before.

I believe that each of us are being asked to be the 1st to love as Fr. Cody has called us to during Advent.

Be the 1st to love at home and then at the office and at school and when you’re out shopping or talking to you neighbor.

Be the 1st to make the sign of the cross in public when beginning you meal or simply pausing to pray.

Be the 1st in your Small Group to invite the others to join St. Paul Street Evangelization efforts.

Be the 1st in your family to make a commitment to one hour of Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament for the coming year to pray for a new evangelization in Thurston County by us, St. Michael Parish.

Be the 1st to say yes when I personally ask you to be a leader for our Councils and Commissions.

Be the 1st to pray in our home with your spouse, your family or by yourself, nurturing your personal relationship with God which is the source of the light of your faith.

Be the 1st to live your baptismal call to be a faithful and faith-filled disciple of Jesus Christ, who is Light for the world.

“Rise up on splendor, St. Michael Parish! Your light has come, the glory of the Lord shines upon you.

“Rise up in splendor St. Michael Parish. Thurston County shall walk by your light and these folks by your shining radiance.”

Let’s follow THIS star for 2018!
